Learning to Fly is highly rewarding and great fun. When is the last time you tried something completely new? There is lots to learn but your instructor, and all of the members of the club, will help with advice, information, loads of knowledge and long sessions planning routes in the clubhouse. A lot of the early learning will happen by talking to other pilots and students and by helping each other.
Membership is open for PPLs, Group A lessons in the Cessna and Microlight lessons on the Eurostar. Membership is subject to approval by the committee and the club having availability at that time.
The Process:
First, start with a couple of trial flights to see if you really want to commit to flying.
Then, get a membership form from a member of the club on one of the days you are there. Membership costs are currently under review. Your membership is subject to approval by the committee and subject to the availability of new member places . Once you have joined the cost of your flying is reduced.
We are currently offering membership for training for a microlight licence in our new EV97 Eurostar aircraft EI-DKW and for Group A in the Cessna. The differences between the microlight and Group A licences and rates etc. will be discussed with your instructor.
Medical:
To get your student pilot’s licence (don’t worry about this at the beginning) you will have to go for a medical. The medical for the Microlight Licence (PPL(M)) is slightly easier than that for the Group A (PPL(A)).
First Solo:
The first solo flight is a milestone in the career of any pilot. After mastering the take-off and landings and the circuit, the instructor will step out of the aircraft and let you off alone. This does tend to focus the mind as you have to put the aircraft back on the ground without the safety net of the instructor beside you. The Solo flight will always remain with you!!
Theory:
There are 4 theory examinations that have to be passed to get your licence. Ground school is conducted by our CFI Joe Davy periodically as numbers demand. The examinations, once passed, are valid for a period of 2 years which means that you can take the theory while preparing for the flight test element.
Flight Test:
The flight test is the final stage in the gaining of the PPL. You will be prepared by your instructor and with lots of practice flights, emergency procedures, simulated engine failures, stall practice and hours and hours of cross countrys!
